Founded in 1981, the zoo occupies the 10 ha area of stunning landscapes. It is an island of green in the heart of a big city.
The zoo garden encompasses spacious meadows and hills, collections of deciduous trees and conifers: a birch grove, a larch ally, an orchad. There are three natural ponds connected by the system of canals at three terraces of the garden. All of these landscape elements create organic unity with the animal enclosures. A viewing platforms allows to watch some animals from above.
Wild animals from warmer climates - lions, jaguars, caracals - have been created special conditions. The primates department with baboons, gibbons, macaques, lemurs, capuchins is always a hit with children. Parrot collection of more than 28 species is also among the most popular among visitors. The zoo breeds rare animals, it is the only zoo in Russia that has successfully bred the great bustard - a rare protected species of birds.
