A branch of Savitsky Art Gallery in Penza, the museum was opened in 1983 in a historic 19th c building.
It is a truly unique museum as it offers its visitors an unprecedented way of observing an art masterpiece. The viewers are concentrated on a single painting and the story that is linked to it. Each show includes a film that highlights the story behind the painting, helping the viewers to immerse into the atmosphere of creative process.
The museum guests have enjoyed the paintings from the collections of the best national museums: the Hermitage and the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, Tretyakov Art Gallery in Moscow, and others. Among the former exhibits of the museum are  ‘Peter the Great Interrogates Tsarevich Alexey at Peterhof’ by N.Ge, ‘Mast-Tree Grove’ by I.Shishkin, ‘Portrait of a Young Woman’ by Titian, ‘Spring Day’ by A.Savrasov, ‘Abraham and Three Angels’ by Rembrandt van Rijn, ‘The Flying Carpet’ by V. Vasnetsov, ‘October’ by I. Levitan, ‘Portrait of F. Chaliapin’ by B. Kustodiev.
Since its foundation, the museum remains one of the most visited in Penza.
